Here’s a head-scratcher for you, if you’ll pardon the pun.
Did you know that it doesn’t matter how clean your hair is, you’ll still get lice?
That’s right. Even if you keep your luscious mane squeaky clean, there’s still a chance that a louse will lay eggs in your hair. Keep in mind that lice need your blood to survive, not a clean environment.
So they will invest your hair no matter what you do. Now, if you’re surprised by this revelation, you’re not alone. This is a common misconception about lice that many believe in.
And it’s not the only one! So why not take the time out to read a bit more on the different head lice myths that might be veering your perception towards hair care?
Head lice do not jump, they walk, with speed. The reason head lice spread so quickly among children is because we keep them all seated together. Since lice can crawl down your jackets or scarves and gloves, they can easily be transferred from one body to another.
Lice aren’t picky when it comes to hair length. In truth, they prefer living closer to the hair shaft, so short hair is actually more comfy to them. However, getting rid of lice from long hair can be a fuss, especially since you might end up leaving a few lice behind. So while a buzz cut isn’t recommended, a long Rapunzel-like mane isn’t the best way to go either.
Lice are not bed bugs. Lice only survive for 24 hours before they become weak and only live to a while longer (2 days maybe) before they die. So the next time lice would come in contact with a human head, it would probably be due to transference from another human head, rather than bedding or furniture.
In truth, some people only start scratching their head if the skin reacts to the lice bites or the sticky glue that attaches the eggs to the strands.
Head lice don’t affect everyone the same way. In fact, some don’t even feel a thing. The best way to know if you have lice is by doing a regular check with a comb once every week.
Ask any parent and you’ll have your answer. Since lice aren’t fussy, they usually take refuge on any head they find. So even an adult doesn’t touch a lice-carrier, they may still be at risk of getting lice.
As a responsible adult (or child), it doesn’t hurt to educate on lice.
