How to Get Rid of Lice

How To Get Rid Of Lice 1

As any parent who has previously suffered from a lice infestation in
their children will tell you, lice are
anything but nice!
Just when you finally
think you got all of the menacing critters out of your kid’s head,
you spot your other child scratching his head—and the nightmare
begins anew!

There are about a whopping 21 million cases of head lice infestations worldwide annually. And given the fact that a single head louse can lay up to 300 eggs in its lifetime, that sure is a lot of bugs crawling around the world!

Head Lice Can Affect Anyone!

Think you’re now an adult, and don’t have to worry about head lice anymore? Always considered head lice to be a problem people with poor hygiene or those from lower socioeconomic regions have to suffer from?

You’d be surprised to know that you’re wrong on both counts!

Head lice epidemics are actually never related to cleanliness. In fact, the cleaner the head, the easier it is for head lice to travel across the hair strands and from one person to another. However, contrary to a commonly held belief, lice are actually unable to fly, and can only be transmitted through direct head-to-head contact with an infected person.

The Various Kinds of Head Lice

A frequently asked question by many of our clients is, “Will my dog/cat/rabbit get infested with the head lice my son got from his school?” or “Is my pet the reason behind the constant re-infestations in my house?”

The answer to both of these questions would be a resounding NO.

Lice are highly species-specific parasites, and only affect the particular species they are “designed” to. Each species of lice requires a different body temperature to survive, and would not be able to survive on a host from any other species.

A human head louse typically thrives in 98.6°F (37°C) temperature, which is the average body temperature of a human. On the other hand, a dog louse requires a steady temperature of 100-102.5°F (38–39.2°C), while a cat louse thrives in 101.4°F (38.6°C). Even if a human louse were to somehow make its way into your pet’s fur, it would be unable to survive for more than 2 days in that temperature, and would die out without human blood.

There are three kinds of lice that can affect a human body:

Head Lice

The most common form of head lice, this kind of head lice is typically 2.1–3.3 mm in length at the adulthood stage. Most often affecting preschool and elementary-aged children and their families, the head lice infestations are more likely to occur in children with long hair than those with short. A major reason for this is that head lice like to be warm, and longer hair provides the perfect shelter from the elements!

This kind of head lice typically has a lifecycle of just over a month from the egg stage to adulthood.

Body Lice

These lice are different from the ones found on the head, and only affect people living in poor sanitary conditions or having poor hygiene. They are larger, and can cause intense itching which can then result in an increased risk of infection. These lice are, again, species specific and will die out within 5–7 days if removed from their human host.

Pubic Lice

Also known as crab lice or just crabs, these kinds of parasites attach to the skin and hair near the groin, and can be transmitted during sexual contact.

Detecting Head Lice

Due to a vast amount of misinformation floating about on the Internet today, many parents often take the home remedy route as soon as they get the notice about an infestation from school. Not only are many of these immensely ineffective, they could also be dangerous for your children!

If you fear your child may have picked up head lice from somewhere, the first course of action is to sit your child in front of a brightly lit window. Part your child’s hair and look for signs of nits. These are lice eggs which are typically white, or a light beige color and are shaped like tiny, pinhead-sized ovals.

They are attached to the hair shaft with the help of a waterproof, glue-like substance which makes them difficult to get rid of. If you do detect any such flecks of foreign bodies in your child, first try to dust them off. If you are successful in getting rid of the particle, it’s probably not a nit, but could be dandruff or a dust!

On the other hand, if you find that the speck is a nit, there’s no need to panic! But immediate action is necessary, both for the child and the family. If your child has started showing signs of having an infestation, it’s highly likely that the bugs have been there for a while and have, by now, spread to other members of the family as well. While head lice do not carry infection, they can cause intense itching and can also be a source of embarrassment for many.

The Role of Over the Counter Treatments

While over-the-counter were a reliable—and effective—way of treating lice once, they no longer are now!

Due to overexposure to the products, lice today have evolved to become resistant to the chemicals in these products, giving birth to a new species of head lice known as superlice. This mutated gene has made head lice even harder to get rid of!

Truth be told, these over-the-counter products never actually killed the lice at all! What they did was paralyze them long enough for them to be washed out easily with water. But because superlice have become resistant to these pesticides, more and more people are now returning to the only tried and tested way of treating head lice: by doing it manually.

Lice Troopers’ Lice Removal Services

At Lice Troopers, we rely on the age-old method of treating lice along with all-natural, non-toxic products to help us in the process. Not only do our methods get rid of all lice and eggs in a single sitting, our highly efficient services also minimize chances of a re-infestation.

If you don’t want to go through the trouble of manually picking out each nit and meticulously combing out your child’s hair with a lice comb until there are no more left, there’s no need to! Because that’s what we’re here for!

How To Get Rid Of Lice 3

In-Home & At-Clinic Lice Removal Services

Can’t make it to one of our nationwide lice clinics for a lice treatment? There’s no need to worry for we’ll come to you! Our team of trained, professional technicians are well-equipped to handle even the worst of lice infestations. In just a few hours, your child and family will be completely lice free!

Our confidentiality agreement ensures no word gets out about your family’s infestation so you don’t have to suffer through the stigma associated with it either!

The process is as easy as it gets. We start out by covering the hair in our all-natural, toxin-free products which makes it difficult for head lice to get a good hold on your hair and makes it easier for them to slip out. We then use a fine-tooth lice comb to remove the adult lice until there are none left. From there, we’ll move on to extract the nits and nymphs (baby lice) with our traditional nit-picking techniques.

Whether you’re coming in to one of our clinics or we’re coming to your location, we treat all our customers with the same amount of precision and attention so you never have a single complain with our services.

Camp & School Screenings

Schools and summer camps are the two places where infestations are most common. Due to the close proximity in which children are interacting with each other—sharing beds, combs, bedding—these places are hotbeds for lice infestations!

Our lice screening drives check each child’s head for signs of lice and nits, and help educate children, school nurses, teachers and parents about how to get rid of head lice and keep children’s heads lice-free. We also provide prevention measures to minimize risk of a re-infestation.

Home Inspections & Cleaning

Following an in-house lice treatment session, we also conduct thorough home inspections and cleanings to make sure there are zero chances of another infestation. While human head lice are unable to survive off a human head, they can still survive for up to 48 hours, which is enough time for them to crawl atop another human host and begin the infestation anew.

With our clinics located in multiple locations across five states including New York, Georgia, Florida, Texas and California, you are just a few steps away from getting rid of all your head lice related woes!

Did your child catch lice? There’s no need to panic; give us a call at 1-800-403-5423 to book our services. We can have your child lice-free in no time!

How to Kill Lice

How To Kill Lice 1

History of Lice

According to genetic studies lice have existed for 1.68 million years before humans, making them one of the most well-adapted species on the planet. As far as history goes, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that lice have been walking on human heads for as long as mankind has existed.

Even the gorgeous Cleopatra couldn’t escape lice; she was apparently buried with several gold lice combs! Clearly, being infested with lice wasn’t that big an issue back then; many other Egyptian leaders were also buried with their lice combs.

Lice weren’t just a nuisance for the Egyptians; lice eggs (nits) have been found on the heads of mummified bodies of ancient Romans too. In the year 1100 AD, a Rabbi declared that his followers were allowed to remove the critters from their heads on the Sabbath and that’s when the war on lice officially started.

Why Remove Lice?

How To Kill Lice 2

Unlike animals, humans aren’t supposed to host parasites. Although lice don’t pose immediate threats to an individual’s health, they are a terrible inconvenience. Also, if they’re left on the head for too long, they will multiply and fully infest the head in 2–3 weeks–yes, they’re that quick!

Here some of the risks of ignoring lice:

Lice Multiply: Lice multiply ridiculously fast; a single female louse will lay hundreds of eggs in her lifespan. You may be able to ignore a couple of lice but when hundreds of pesky critters are feeding off your scalp, you’re bound to experience serious discomfort.

Scalp Infections: Lice do not carry diseases, however, when you have enough of them living on your head and sucking your scalp, the chances of developing a scalp infection are significantly higher.

An adult that is infested with lice may be able to resist the urge to scratch their heads but kids have tendency to scratch excessively out of discomfort. The excessive scratching causes lesions making them more susceptible to scalp infections.

Anemia: Lice feed off their host’s scalp; their food is the blood they suck from scalps. Children with hundreds of lice on their heads may become anemic overtime due to the consistent loss of blood.

They Spread: Lice spread from head to head. A child with an infested head has the potential to spread lice to the entire school!

Lice do not carry diseases however it’s unnatural for humans to host parasites; letting lice remain on our heads make us vulnerable to health conditions in the long-run.

The Lifecycle of Lice

In a matter of just a couple of months lice can hatch, grow into adults, reproduce and die. While this is the same for most insects, other insects don’t make us their food!

As mentioned earlier, lice can infest an entire head in a matter of 2–3 weeks. In order to effectively remove and kill lice, you will have to break their lifecycle.

1. Nits

Lice start off as tiny eggs called nits. Other species may be vulnerable as eggs but not lice– lice are the strongest when they’re eggs. Females lay eggs close to the scalp to protect them from harm. The eggs are covered in a glue-like substance which allows them to latch on to hair strands. Unless someone picks them out manually, lice eggs will not move.

2. Nymphs

Baby lice are referred to as nits. Their tiny size enables them to escape the teeth of the fine lice-combs. Compared to adult lice, nymphs don’t cause much harm since they cannot reproduce. With that being said, it only takes a couple of weeks for a nymph to become an adult louse.

3. Adult lice

Lice do the most damage in the adult form. Female lice can begin laying nits just a couple of days after mating. They lay up to 7 nits per day for around 16 days after they’ve mated! A female louse will mate several times before she dies—after each time, she can lay around 112 nits!

You child may just have a couple of lice on their heads but it won’t be long before they have a full fledged infestation.

How Do You Break The Cycle?

You’ll have to break the cycle. It’s best to extract adult lice as soon as possible to prevent the females from laying more nits. Killing adult lice was much easier a few decades ago using anti-lice shampoo and medication. Unfortunately, due to overexposure, lice have mutated and become resistant to them.

Superlice

The new generation of lice called Superlice is resistant to 90% of OTC anti-products. No matter the length of time you leave anti-lice shampoos in your hair for, it will be ineffective in killing Superlice.

Anti-Lice Products

Anti-lice products do not kill lice; they just paralyze lice allowing people to wash them away in the shower. Even when anti-lice shampoos did paralyze lice, they weren’t effective in breaking the cycle because the nits remained unharmed.

There really is no point in removing adult lice without extracting nits—nitpicking is crucial!

How to Treat Lice

How To Treat Lice 1

Lice have been a problem for people for centuries. They don’t cause any immediate health problems but no one likes the idea of hosting parasites on their head!

To make matters worse, lice multiply exponentially; female lice will lay over a hundred nits (lice eggs) after each time they mate. They’ll lay nits, the nits will hatch, and in a week or two the nymphs (baby lice) will become adult lice and be able to reproduce.

Unless the cycle is broken, it will keep going and a time will come where the lice will be dropping out of hair strands and fall onto clothing, bedding, etc.

Parents are advised to not let their child’s head lice get out of control. Even though lice don’t carry diseases it’s better to remove instead of letting them live in your kids head.

So how do you treat lice?

You’ll find plenty of bizarre treatments of treating lice on the Internet. Let’s take a look at some of them:

1. Slathering Mayonnaise On The Infested Head

One of the messiest methods of removing lice (according to the internet) is to slather the infested head with mayonnaise. How does mayonnaise kill lice? It doesn’t—very few things do. Mayonnaise may not kill lice but the internet suggests that its thickness can clog the breathing holes of lice and in turn cause them to suffocate and die.

Here’s what the blogs on the internet don’t tell you—lice can hold their breath for over 8 hours. Unless you’re planning to keep your child’s head covered in mayonnaise for a day, trying to suffocate each louse walking on their head will be very difficult to do.

2. Shrink Wrapping The Infested Head

Dousing the infested head with mayonnaise isn’t the only way of supposedly suffocating lice, you can also try and use shrink wrap. Parent bloggers claim that wrapping their child’s head in shrink wrap stopped lice from breathing and allowed them to be washed away under running water.

As creative as this method is, it’s just not effective and nor is it safe for your child. It’s impossible for you to shrink wrap your child’s head tight enough for it suffocate such tiny insects. Even if you do manage to obstruct their breathing, lice can hold their breath for over 8 hours.

By shrink wrapping your child’s head, the lice won’t die but you most definitely will cause your child tremendous discomfort.

3. Water Dunks

If the other “treatments” weren’t bizarre enough, some parents suggest that you try and dunk your child’s head in water. Lice don’t like water and will take cover when they’re exposed to it. However that doesn’t mean that they can be washed away by it. Lice have claws that allow them to grip hair strands; they will not be moved by water.

Anti-Lice Products

How To Treat Lice 2

Using over-the-counter anti-lice products was once the go-to method of treating lice from a child’s head but due to overexposure, these products are no longer effective.

Just like other insects undergo mutations to survive exposure to specific pesticides, lice have also evolved and become resistant to pesticides that are commonly used in anti-lice products.

Superlice

This new and evolved generation of lice is aptly named “Superlice.” Lice have always been strong survivors but with this new mutation it’s become even harder to treat them.

Anti-lice products never “killed” lice; they simply paralyzed them so they can be washed away under running water. But today the most prominent names of the anti-lice products market have zero effect on them.

Superlice cannot be beaten by your average OTC anti-lice product. To treat Superlice, you’ll have to return to oldest lice removing technique in the book—manual extraction!

Manual extraction of each lice and nit is the best treatment for lice.

Lice Troopers’ Lice Removal Services

How To Treat Lice 3

At Lice Troopers we don’t rely on OTC anti-lice products to treat lice, instead we use all-natural products, advanced technology and manual nit-picking techniques to remove not just lice but their nits too.

Our professional and highly efficient lice removal services include in-home lice removal, camp & school screenings and home inspection and cleaning.

We also give our customers the option to visit our lice treatment salons if they would prefer to carry out treatment outside the house.

In-Home Lice Removal

At the end of the day, lice are pesky critters; they’re tiny insects that feast off our scalps when given the chance. Lice are icky and it’s understandable if you don’t want to go through the trouble of meticulously combing through your child’s hair and picking lice.

At the end of the day, lice are pesky critters; they’re tiny insects that feast off our scalps when given the chance. Lice are icky and it’s understandable if you don’t want to go through the trouble of meticulously combing through your child’s hair and picking lice.

The process is simple. We’ll cover the infested hair in our all-natural products and slowly comb through it with a fine-tooth lice comb. Removing adult-lice with a fine-tooth is easy; it’s the nits and the nymphs (baby lice) that require more work. To extract nits and nymphs are experts will traditional nit picking techniques.

Once your child’s head is clean, we’ll check other family members for lice too.

Camp & School Screenings

Because kids are in close proximity to one another, it’s much easier for them to catch lice compared to adults.

Knowing that schools and camps are hotbeds for lice, we provide school and camp screenings to ensure that all kids are lice-free.

Way too often school nurses and camp organizers fail to identify nits and lice. Camp organizers and school nurses can hire Lice Troopers to check each child’s head.

We’re here to lend a helping hand and keep your students head free of lice.

Lice Treatment Salons

We understand if you don’t want lice to be removed at your house so we provide the option of booking an appointment at one of our lice treatment salons.

Our kid-friendly lice treatment salons offer a comfortable atmosphere that put your kids at ease. We’ll use our all-natural products to make it easier for us to extract lice by combing it carefully using a customized fine-tooth comb.

We also have special technology that enables us to spot the nits and nymphs hidden in the roots. Removing every single nymph and nit is crucial in preventing re-infestations in the future.

Our lice treatment salons are located across the country including New York, Georgia, Florida, Texas and other states too.

Home Inspection and Cleaning

Home inspection and cleaning is needed to ensure that all our hard work doesn’t go to waste. It’s common for lice to fall off hair and although they need human blood to survive, they can live without a human host for about 48 hours.

By inspecting and cleaning your home, we pick up any rogue lice that may have fallen onto bedding, pillows, rugs, carpers, etc and reduce chances of infestations.
