LICE MATURE RAPIDLY—EARLY DETECTION IS KEY!

If only we could let an infestation just “take its course,” the way we do with a cold. If only we could give it a week or two and it would go away on its own. Unfortunately, that’s not how this bug works. The head louse parasite isn’t going anywhere. Once you have it, you will continue to have it until it is intentionally removed.

The life cycle of the head louse provides some insight. When a bug or nit find their way into the hair, they are looking for a source of food. As a parasite, that means they must have a host in order to survive. And the unique characteristic of head lice is that they go for the scalp of their host, biting into the skin in order to suck blood as their means of sustenance.

Once the louse has reached the head, and a new food source, it begins to lay eggs, also known as nits. The life cycle of the louse is about 30 days, but head lice mature rapidly from the nit stage and within 7-10 days are able to lay about 100 more eggs that will hatch into new bugs, which will then lay more eggs. Soon you have a full, thriving infestation growing stronger by the day. You can get rid of even 99% of the bugs and nits in your child’s hair and there will still be sufficient bugs and nits to grow an entirely new population.

It is for this reason that early detection is so important. Each day an infestation goes unchecked, it is growing, and also spreading. Couch cushions, hair brushes, winter hats and pillows are all places where the bugs and their nits may be left behind and can then travel to the heads of other adults and children. Soon you have a household or classroom full of the pesky pest.

We suggest a screening at the first suspicion of an outbreak. This ensures that if your child has been exposed, treatment can be performed immediately, and the risk of future distress or spreading is eliminated. Lice Troopers offers screenings in our centrally located Miami clinic, or by convenient house call, with extended evening and weekend hours to accommodate your family.
