How To Deep Clean Your Home After Lice Take Over
If you have successfully dealt with a lice infestation at home, you’ve solved one part of the problem. Now it’s time to clean your home thoroughly.
Home cleaning is necessary to prevent another infestation from occurring. Head lice spread among people via contact. Contrary to popular perception, head lice cannot fly or jump from one place to another. Instead, they claw up and down the scalp.
Along with direct head-to-head contact, lice can spread through clothes, hair products and accessories. Sharing head scarves, caps, hats, combs and brushes, towels, sweaters, coats and pillow cases can spread lice among people.
Cleaning tips and tricks you need to know about
In order to reduce the chance of a re-infestation, follow these simple tips:- Clean your brushes, combs, hats, caps, hair bands and other hair accessories. Use hot water to disinfect them.
- Use a bit of soap and water to clean glasses, earrings, phones and head phones.
- Place all your jackets, scarves, sweaters, etc. in the dryer (on high heat) for 30 minutes. Heat will kill lice. If you are afraid of ruining the fabric due to heat, you can place them in the freezer for 12 hours.
- Clean all bedrooms and the living room. Take off all the bed sheets, pillow cases and mattress pads and place them in the dryer for 30 minutes. Once again, set the dryer on high heat. Repeat this for at least a week.
- The car seats and headrest should be vacuumed. Use a damp rug to wipe leather car seats.
- Vacuum rugs and carpets, especially area around the main couch in the living room. Keep doing this for at least 5 days.
- Place your children’s stuffed toys and dolls in the dryer on high heat for 30 minutes.
