How do lice spread?
Unlike what many of us believe, lice do not have wings. This means that they can’t fly from one person’s head to another. Then how do they spread and spread so quickly?
Like other insects, head lice can crawl fast, moving long distances in a matter of seconds. Through crawling, lice can move easily to a new host.
Through direct contact:
It mostly occurs when we put our heads together. This can often happen while hugging or laying your head in close proximity to another person. Kids often sit closely in school, making it easier for lice to travel. Playing and other activities can also increase the chances of head-to-head contact.
You can avoid getting too close to your friends, but your children can’t. A good idea to avoid the infestation is to keep checking for lice on a regular basis.
Through personal belongings:
Sharing head wear such as hats, helmets and caps can spread if a person has a lice infestation. Children often share their hair ties and pins at school. Make sure you or your child do not borrow head wear from anyone.
Clothes such as coats and ear muffs can also spread lice. Even if you aren’t wearing them, they can still transfer on coat racks and in lockers.
Sharing a comb or brush can spread lice even more easily. Even if you can’t see any lice roaming on the bristles, it might have nits (eggs).These can get stuck to your scalp and the young ones will hatch and infest your scalp.
Other personal items including sports gear can also allow head lice to travel from host to host. Make sure each member of your family has their own gear when going out for swimming or other such activities.
