WHERE DO HEAD LICE COME FROM?

Each year between six and twelve million individuals will experience an infestation. But even though it is quite common, especially among children, when kids end up with an infestation, parents are often left scratching their heads and wondering, “Where do head lice come from?” And more importantly, “How did my child get them?” In some cases you will be able to trace the event to an individual who had it and passed it to others. But many times you won’t know. Here are some of the common ways the head louse parasite is passed.

Head-to-Head Contact

This parasite lives in the hair and on the scalp. As a parasite, it must have a human host in order to survive, so when the bug makes contact with the hair, it crawls the length of the hair shaft to reach the skin of the scalp. Sucking the individual’s blood provides the food source that allows the bug to live, lay eggs and multiply its numbers. When heads come into contact through play, hugs or selfie photographs, the bugs have the ability to pass from head to head.

Beds and Furniture

This parasite will be found on linens or furniture that comes into contact with the hair, such as couch cushions, upholstered automobile seats, pillows, sheets and towels. When these items are shared, the bugs can pass. By not sharing towels, sleeping bags or pillows, you can help prevent the spread.

Personal Belongings

This is one of the easiest ways to spread an epidemic. Hair brushes and hair accessories, hats, coats, scarves and stuffed animals are primary vehicles of lice and nits. They are also items that are commonly shared among children, hence the frequency of this condition among kids and teens. One of the biggest steps toward preventing an infestation is simply not sharing these items.
