Lice Magnet: Types of Hair That Attract the Blood-Sucking Parasites

The problem with lice is that they aren’t picky at all! All they need is a strand of hair to hold on to and the rest is history. Often times we hear that if you get a buzz cut, you’re not at risk of getting head lice. Unfortunately, that can’t be farther from the truth. As long as you’re not bald, you can get lice infestation in no time. There are, however, certain types of hair that attract the blood sucking parasites more than the others. Here’s a list.

Long Hair

Long hair is easier to access and thus attracts head lice. People often tie their hair up in a bun to prevent lice infestation but you should know that it only takes a small piece of hair for lice to hold on to and settle in your scalp where they can live for at least 30 days.

Uncombed Hair

Messy hair with a ton of knots is the perfect hideout for lice. Moreover, if you’re a parent, it can be hard for you to screen your child’s hair for lice if it’s uncombed. Thus, when on a hair cleaning mission, make sure you carefully take out all the knots from your hair and part it to looks for nits and lice. As the parasites don’t like light, you’re likely to find them hiding in darker spots including behind your ears and at the nape of your neck.

Product-Free Hair

People who use styling products are more likely to have no lice. Part of the reason is that the chemicals in the gels and creams can kill the nits in the hair. Hair without styling products, on the other hand, is more attractive for the head lice.

Children Hair

Head-to-head contact is one of the main causes of lice among children. When your child goes to school, at sleepovers, or summer camps and come in contact with other children, there’s a high risk that they’ll get a head lice infestation.
